THE VACATION

We had visited Vermont in 1997, just before the infamous ice storm, staying at Smugglers Notch, the other side of the mountain from Stowe. What we had seen of Stowe, we wanted to visit again.

We flew into Boston Logan airport on Thursday 17th November and picked up the Chevy Blazer, our hire car for the two weeks, fought our way out of the airport and its never ending road construction and made our way to Henniker in New Hampshire for an overnight stay in The Colby Hill Inn.

Henniker is quite superb! What a lovely small town, with a huge river! (Jealous) P.S., pictures will follow of Henniker and Colby Hill Inn, once I take them from the Digital camcorder

After a lovely night in Henniker, the next morning we visited Concorde, the state capitol of New Hampshire before travelling up to Stowe, Vermont.

When we arrived, it was a little different than the last time, as there was no snow!, but fortunately, that was soon in coming.

Staying at The Mountainside Resort, Mount Mansfield was just a short hop up the road. That is, as far as you could get, as Route 108 over the mountain linking Stowe with Smugglers is closed during the winter, as the pictures show.

Places to go to.

Plenty of restaurants, including Ye Olde England Inn, run by some ex-pats, who also run a British Invasion once a year, Gracies restaurant, Miguels Stowe away, plus many others.

For energetic people, there is lots to do, from walking (Route marching ) in the snow up the Route 108 as we did, walking along Stowe village's recreation path, skiing, snowboarding, horse riding, ski mobiles, the list goes on and on.

As for when you want to relax, or apre ski, there are PLENTY of bars, including a superb Sports Bar with 20 televisions, showing a variety of sports, LOVELY!

You should take the self tour visit of the local covered bridges, as sight to see, you can visit Montreal, just 2 hours away, New York State, over the lake, Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Factory just down the road, Cabot Creamery, The Teddy Bear museum and Burlington, the closest large town, plus Vermont State capitol Montpelier, all no more than 30 mins away.

For shopping, take the two hour journey from Stowe to North Conway in New Hampshire, with it's designer outlet shops. Always buy in New Hampshire, it has no sales tax! So it is another 7% cheaper than Vermont, which is already cheap!

On the way to North Conway, you can go past Mount Washington, the highest point in the USA. On the way back past the mountain at night, the temperature dropped to -16oC (3oF) Chilly!

A great holiday, with very friendly people. If you never visit, you will miss out on a superb area and superb people.

Known as Polland Bridge after the Waterville Judge who helped sue Cambridge to put in the bridge, but he died the year it was built)

The bridge gave direct access to the freight station at the railroad junction for communities to the North after it was built in 1887.

This bridge is a very long span, second longest in Vermont( 140 feet), but is closed to traffic after trucks ignored the 2 tonne limit and have damaged it in 1993
